This route begins near the holiday home Alma-Arasan, situated in the picturesque ravine of the river Prokhodnaya. This river is famous for the sudden change of landscape patterns: in the lower parts this river flows through a narrow gorge surrounded by coniferous and leaf-bearing forests but if you walk up the flow of the river and reach the height of 3 000 m above sea level, you suddenly find yourselves in the wide open area covered with the Alpine grass.
From the upper parts of the river Prokhodnaya, after climbing over the gently sloping crest covered with snow almost all year round, we get to the valley of the river Ozernaya flowing to Bolshoye Almatinskoye lake.
Further on the route goes along the river Kizil-Say. Sharp peaks of rocks rise on both sides of the ravine and above all this stands the pyramid of the ice-covered peak of Molodaya Gvardiya (4 394 m) dominating over the panorama. The path leads to the pass of Turistov (of Tourists) (3 930 m) situated in the zone of never-melting snows.
From this pass tourists descend along the rims of the glacier to one of the most beautiful valleys of Zailiyskiy Alatau – the valley of the river Leviy Talgar. The ravine of this river has its own peculiarities: the Alpine tundra gradually changes into the zone of the Alpine grasslands and the coniferous forest goes along with the shrubberies of raspberry canes and mountain ashes and birch groves. Descending to the valley along the grass-covered slopes one can closely watch the tongues of glaciers sliding from the summits to the bottom of the ravine.
Due to its remote location from the main tourist routes and crowded roads these places preserve their virgin state and people can often see wild animals here.
The way from the ravine of Leviy Talgar to the valley of the river Malaya Almatinka lies through the Alpine pastures called jailau and over the Butakovskiy pass. From this place there is a very beautiful view of the city.
